Server-Sent Events Made My Restaurant System Less Painful

In my Intelligent Restaurant Management System, I had a small but annoying problem.

Some parts of the system needed updates quickly. Orders, table status, kitchen workflow, that kind of thing. At first, the simple solution was polling. Just ask the server every few seconds if something changed.

Very elegant. Very lazy. Very “it works on my machine.”

The problem was that polling every 5 seconds made the system feel slower than it should. It also created unnecessary requests. Most of the time, nothing changed, but the frontend still kept asking the backend anyway. Basically the application was saying “anything new?” again and again like an impatient child in a car.

So I tried Server-Sent Events.

SSE was a good fit because I mostly needed one-way updates from the server to the client. The client did not need to constantly send messages back like a full WebSocket setup. It just needed to receive updates when something changed.

After switching the update flow to SSE, the perceived update time went from around 5 seconds to roughly 0.7 seconds in my testing. More importantly, the system stopped wasting as many repeated polling requests. Instead of asking every few seconds, the frontend could just wait and react when the server pushed an event.

It was not magic. It was just a better communication pattern for the problem.

That is the funny thing about backend development. Sometimes the improvement is not from adding a huge new architecture. Sometimes it is just realizing that the current solution is dumb in a very fixable way.

Polling was simple, but it was also noisy. SSE kept the simplicity, but made the system feel much more responsive.

I still like WebSocket, but not every real-time feature needs WebSocket. Sometimes SSE is enough. Sometimes “enough” is actually the better engineering choice.

Shocking, I know.
